MT5 Python error -10003: IPC initialize failed (RES_E_INTERNAL_FAIL_INIT)
mt5.initialize() couldn't start or find a MetaTrader 5 terminal, often shown as "MetaTrader 5 x64 not found". Pass the path.
What it means
You see this code in mt5.last_error() in Python, after a package call returns None or False.
The first step, finding and connecting to a terminal, failed. The message often reads like "IPC initialize failed, MetaTrader 5 x64 not found".
Until it works, no other call in the package can work.
Common causes
- No 64-bit MetaTrader 5 terminal installed on the machine.
- A terminal in a non-standard folder, such as a broker's own build.
- Python running on Linux or macOS. The package needs Windows and a local terminal.
- Python and the terminal running as different Windows users.
How to fix it
- Pass the full path to
terminal64.exewithpath=. - Install the 64-bit terminal and start it once by hand.
- Run Python on the same Windows machine and user as the terminal.
Example in Python:
import MetaTrader5 as mt5
ok = mt5.initialize(path=r"C:\Program Files\MetaTrader 5\terminal64.exe")
if not ok:
print(mt5.last_error()) # (-10003, 'IPC initialize failed, ...') if not found Is it safe to retry?
After pointing it at a terminal that exists.
Could the order have executed?
Not a trade. Nothing can execute before the connection exists.
How Tickwire handles it
With Tickwire your code calls a REST API from any operating system. You don't install this package or keep a terminal running yourself. See the MT5 Python API page.
