You connect ChatGPT to MetaTrader 5 by adding a remote MCP server that holds your trading account. Tickwire is one: it runs your MT5 or MT4 terminal in the cloud and gives ChatGPT a sign-in page where you pick the accounts and choose look only or look and trade. It takes about five minutes, and you never paste a broker password into ChatGPT.

This guide covers what you need, the five steps, the first questions to ask, and how to cut the link. The ChatGPT steps follow OpenAI's documentation, checked on 4 October 2026. We have not yet connected ChatGPT to Tickwire ourselves, so if a menu has moved, OpenAI's pages are the place to check. The same flow in Claude is in [How to connect Claude to your MT4 or MT5 account](https://tickwire.io/blog/connect-claude-to-mt5/).

## What you need

- **A ChatGPT plan with developer mode.** OpenAI lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education, on chatgpt.com. It is not on the free plan. In a Business, Enterprise or Education workspace, an admin may have to allow developer mode first.
- **A Tickwire login with an MT4 or MT5 account on it.** You can start with the [7-day free trial](https://tickwire.io/pricing/). Test on a demo account first.
- **The MCP server address:** `https://api.tickwire.io/mcp`

ChatGPT connects to remote servers from OpenAI's cloud. A terminal on your own laptop is not reachable from there, which is why the terminal has to be hosted. More on that on the [MetaTrader MCP server page](https://tickwire.io/metatrader-mcp-server/).

## The five steps

1. On chatgpt.com, open **Settings**, then **Security and login**, and turn on **Developer mode**.
2. Go to **Plugins** and press **+** to create an app.
3. Name it Tickwire, paste `https://api.tickwire.io/mcp` under **Connection**, choose **OAuth** and create it.
4. ChatGPT opens Tickwire's sign-in. Sign in, pick the accounts ChatGPT may use, choose **Look only** or **Look and trade**, and press **Allow**.
5. In a new chat, open the **+** menu, choose **Developer mode** and select Tickwire.

You don't need an API key, a client ID or a secret. The sign-in creates a limited key for ChatGPT behind the scenes. It can only see the accounts you ticked.

ChatGPT asks you to confirm each action that changes something, such as placing an order, unless you tell it to remember your answer for that chat. Keep those prompts on while you learn how it behaves.

## Look only or look and trade

Start with **Look only**. ChatGPT can then read balances, positions, orders, prices, candles and history, and it can't place, change or close anything. A trade attempt is refused with `read_only_key` and nothing reaches the broker.

Switch to **Look and trade** when you trust the setup. Every order then passes the same checks as any agent: the account must be in scope, the kill switches must be off, and your own pre-trade hook, if you set one, must allow it. See [AI trading agents](https://tickwire.io/ai-agents/) for how those work.

## Good first questions

Read before you trade. These use only read tools:

- "List my Tickwire accounts and their health."
- "Show the open positions on my MT5 account, with profit in the account currency."
- "What is the spread on EURUSD right now, and what is the minimum lot size?"
- "Summarise my closed trades from the last seven days."

ChatGPT calls tools such as `list_accounts`, `get_account_health`, `get_positions`, `get_quote`, `get_symbol_spec` and `get_history`. The full list is on the [MCP server page](https://tickwire.io/metatrader-mcp-server/). More prompts are on the [prompts page](https://tickwire.io/prompts/).

## Before you approve an order

When ChatGPT proposes a trade, check four things in the confirm prompt:

- the account, the symbol (brokers name symbols differently, such as `EURUSDm`) and the side;
- the volume in lots, not in money;
- the stop loss and take profit as prices;
- the `reason`. Every trading tool needs one, and it is written to the audit log.

After it runs, read the `outcome`. `applied` means the terminal confirmed it. `rejected` means it was not executed. `unknown` means it may have executed: ask ChatGPT to call `get_trade_status`, then check positions, before anything else. A repeat with the same request returns the first answer with `replayed: true`, never a second order.

## How to disconnect

- In ChatGPT, delete the Tickwire app or turn it off in the chat.
- In the Tickwire dashboard, revoke the key ChatGPT was given, or engage its kill switch. That stops it at once, whatever ChatGPT does.
- Read what it did in the audit log, with the time, the tool and the reason for each change.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can ChatGPT trade MetaTrader 5 directly?

Not on its own. ChatGPT needs a tool that holds the trading account. Tickwire's hosted MCP server is that tool: it runs the MT5 or MT4 terminal and gives ChatGPT read and trade tools after you sign in and choose what it may do.

### Does this work with MT4 as well as MT5?

Yes. The same MCP server works with MetaTrader 4 accounts. A few MT5 features, such as market depth and tick history, answer not_supported_on_mt4 on an MT4 account instead of made-up data.

### Is it available on the free ChatGPT plan?

No. OpenAI lists developer mode on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans, on chatgpt.com. On a work plan an admin may need to allow it first.

### Does ChatGPT see my broker password?

No. You give the broker login to Tickwire once, when you add the account. ChatGPT only gets a limited key from the sign-in, scoped to the accounts you picked.

### Can I let ChatGPT read but not trade?

Yes. Choose Look only at sign-in. Any trade attempt is refused with read_only_key and nothing is sent to the broker.

### What does it cost?

The MCP server is included with every Tickwire plan. Accounts start at $12 a month each after the 7-day free trial. See the [pricing page](https://tickwire.io/pricing/).
